Uganda Rhinos stormed into the Tier C Round of 16 at the FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival in Azerbaijan after a convincing 5-2 victory over Yemen on Wednesday.
The Rhinos produced a dominant attacking display, with Jefferson Kwikiriza and Angello Kasumba both scoring twice before Ian Wafula completed the rout.
Kwikiriza set Uganda on their way with two quick goals in the 9th and 11th minutes, giving the young Rhinos an early advantage.
Kasumba then extended Uganda’s lead with goals in the 27th and 31st minutes, leaving Yemen with a mountain to climb.
Wafula added the fifth in the 37th minute as Uganda took a commanding 5-0 lead.
Yemen pulled two goals back, but Uganda remained in control to comfortably secure their place in the Tier C last 16.
The victory adds to Uganda’s strong run in the tournament. After opening with a narrow 4-3 defeat to Kyrgyz Republic, the Rhinos responded with a 6-0 win over Equatorial Guinea and a 5-1 victory against Cabo Verde before dispatching Yemen.
Uganda’s next test comes later today against Japan in the Tier C Round of 16. Japan booked their place in the last 16 with a 1-0 victory over Mozambique in their Round of 32 tie.
The winner of the Uganda-Japan clash will advance to the quarter-finals, where they are likely to face either Chile or Belarus, who meet in the corresponding Round of 16 tie.
