Uganda Opens FIBA ZoneV Women’s Afrobasket Qualifiers with a win against Kenya

Uganda tipped off her FIBA ZoneV Women’s Afrobasket qualifiers campaign with a 78-56 victory over neighbors Kenya at the Hassan Moustafa Hall in Cairo on Monday 3rd February.

The Gazelles were on the front foot throughout all quarters, with a 23-11 win at the end of the first quarter both teams scored 17 in the second resulting into a 40-28 halftime lead for Uganda who also posted a similar score in the third quarter, limiting Kenya to only 9 points.

This meant a 57-37 score as both headed into the final quarter, Gazelles Captain Jane Asinde led from the frontline, posting a game high 24 Points, and 9 rebounds.

The celebrations may however be soon muted as the Gazelles quickly have to turn their attention to perhaps their biggest challenge in the city of pyramids.

They’ll play against hosts and defending champions Egypt tomorrow at 7pm Ugandan Time then South Sudan on Wednesday and face Burundi in the last group game on Thursday.

The winner of this qualifier tournament will be rewarded with the sole spot at the finals set to take place in the Ivorian Capital of Abidjan this July.
