Uganda U20 National team (Hippos) got off to a flying staying with 3-0 win against Ethiopia in the U20 TotalEnergies AFCON Zonal Qualifiers campaign at the Azam stadium on Monday.

Godfrey Ssekibengo, Swabir Mpasa and Innocent Kisolo were the Hippos goal scorers on the evening with two coming in the opening half and other stanza.

Ssekibengo opened the scoring with a half volley just twenty three (23) minutes into the game after a beautiful cross from the right wing by Richard Okello.

With six minutes left to the break, Mpasa doubled the lead with another volley infront of Ethiopia shot stopper after a well delivered cross by Ssekibengo, complimented by a Allan Oyirwoth brush at the edge of the box.

The third came in a minute to full-time after an intense press only for substitute Innocent Kisolo to steal the ball for a strike, few steps from the center line past goal keeper Biniyam Babulo.

After the game, happy Swahili flowing Matia Lule came out glad for the three points and also add that his side should take the rest of the games seriously;

“We are happy that we have started the title defence with a comfortable win.” He said

But we still have two more matches in the group stage that we must take seriously,” Lule concluded

In the earlier Group B match Burundi stopped South Sudan 1-0 in a match played at the KMC Stadium with a Christophe Ndayikengurukiye strike just eight (8) minutes into the game.

Thé Hippos are now top of Group B on 3 points, level with Burundi but subjected to a better goal difference.

Uganda will face Burundi next on Wednesday 9 October 2024 in the KMC stadium at 4 pm.
