In a groundbreaking development for the Mukono region, the third edition of the annual Deep End Schools Cricket Tournament is set to commence in style on Saturday, October 12, 2024.
This prestigious event is a collaboration between Deep End Sports Media and the Mukono Cricket Community, with a primary focus on nurturing and showcasing talent among students through rigorous training programs.
This year’s tournament introduces two new participants: St. Mary’s College Namagunga and Gayaza High School, enhancing the competitive with flair.
Over the past editions, Jinja SS secured the girls’ title while Takajunge Community Team triumphed in the boys’ category during the inaugural tournament.
Last year, Mukono Kings High School and St. Cornelius SS Kalagala emerged victorious in the girls’ and boys’ categories, respectively.
In a bid to engage a wider audience, select matches will be streamed live, enabling fans who cannot attend in person to follow the action closely.
Simon Kintu, chairman of the Mukono Cricket Community and head of the local organizing committee, expressed his excitement for the tournament.
He confirmed that all preparations are complete and noted that the participating teams have been training diligently, eager to perform at their best on this significant stage.
The friendly rivalry between St. Cornelius SS Kalagala and Mukono Kings has generated considerable anticipation, with both teams determined to claim the ultimate prize.
The tournament will take place across three venues: Gayaza Ground, Namagunga Ground, and Mt. St. Henry’s Ground.
This setup not only fosters a spirit of competition but also encourages cricket’s growing popularity among students.
To enhance the experience, head teachers and the Director of Studies from both St. Cornelius and Mukono Kings have pledged to set up projectors at their schools, allowing students to watch and support their teams during matches.
In the girls’ category, teams will compete in a round-robin format, with the top two advancing to the finals.
Meanwhile, the boys’ category will follow a best-of-two format, ensuring a thrilling contest over two weekends.
With a commitment to talent development and community engagement, the Deep End Schools Cricket Tournament promises to be an inspiring event, showcasing the best of school cricket in Mukono.
