Football can get complicated at times especially when tactics, technic and all those things involved are explained by the coaches. But at the end of the day, to the fans football is about goals. If you can put the ball in the onion bag at one end and keep them out at the other, then you’ve got a chance of success. And if you can’t, well it’s going to be a struggle.
The 2019/20 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season has been full of high-quality strikers, and of different types – target men who lead the line, speedy off the shoulder No.9s, forwards who drop deep and link play and those who like to drift wide into space before exploding into the danger zone.
The Touchline Sports’ Kamardin Shero takes a look at the top-performing strikers in the 2019/20 season
5 – Brain Aheebwa – Mbarara City FC
Flitting between a role as a central striker and from wide, Aheebwa scrapes onto our list after really stepping up this season.
The magical forward has been top-notch this season finding the back of the net on 8 occasions in the league and has surpassed Paul Muccurezi as Mbarara City FC leading scorer.
4 – Robert Ssentongo- Kyetume FC
It’s fair to say that without Robert Ssentongo in their ranks, Kyetume FC would be as good as relegated – they only have 24 points, but if the veteran and former URA FC and KCCA FC forward was not there, that figure would well be smaller.
Ssentongo has been involved in half of the Slaughterer’s 24 goals this season (8 goals and 4 assists).
3 – Frank Kalanda – Express FC
Frank Kalanda has been a very important piece that has helped Express FC survive relegation this season.
The former URA FC and Lweza forward has scored a third of Express FC’s goals this season and has been a mainstay in the team.
He scored a crucial goal against Maroons FC at Luzira prisons ground in a period when the Red Eagles needed some inspiration.
2 – Fahad Bayo – Vipers
Signed in August 2019 from Zambia’s Buildcon FC, Fahad Bayo hit the ground running so fast, notching in 12 goals and helping his side win the 2019/20 SUPL title with 4 points ahead of KCCA.
In many ways, he’s the ideal lone striker: big enough to hold it up, quick enough to offer a threat in the channels, intelligent enough to win freekicks, and has a touch that he has worked hard on to improve. By some distance, this is his most productive season in the top tier.
1 – Steven Mukwala – Maroons FC
Although Maroons FC has been relegated from the StarTimes Uganda Premier League, Mukwala who has been on loan from champions Vipers SC, has scooped the 2019/20 golden boot on 13 goals scored in 22 games.
That is 50% of his team’s goals this season and this has won him a handful of admirers and taken his services a notch higher with bigger clubs now seeking for his signature.
