Samuel Ssenyojo netted a hat-trick as Express Football Club delivered a dominant 4-1 victory over Wakiso Giants at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Monday night. His stellar performance powered the Red Eagles to an emphatic win, keeping them in the hunt for a strong finish in the Uganda Premier League.

Tribute to Abubakar Lawal

Before kickoff, a moment of silence was observed in honor of Abubakar Lawal, the Vipers SC player who passed away on February 24, 2025.

The hosts took an early lead in the 15th minute when Ssenyojo calmly converted a penalty, awarded after Richard Basangwa was brought down in the box by defender Ssemakula.

Ssenyojo had a golden chance to double the advantage just seven minutes later but failed to convert from close range. Wakiso Giants responded with sporadic attacks but failed to break through Express’ solid defense, leaving the score 1-0 at halftime.

The visitors found a lifeline in the 65th minute when Moses Oloya volleyed home from a pinpoint Blanchar Mulamba cross, leveling the game at 1-1.

However, Express wasted no time in reclaiming their lead, as Basangwa unleashed a powerful strike in the 70th minute, restoring their advantage.

With Wakiso Giants pushing forward, gaps in their defense became evident, and Express ruthlessly exploited them. Samuel Ssenyojo bagged his second goal in the 89th minute before completing his hat trick in stoppage time, marking the first-ever hat trick at the newly redeveloped Hamz Stadium.

League Standings & Implications

The victory propelled Express to sixth place with 28 points, strengthening their position in the Uganda Premier League standings. Meanwhile, Wakiso Giants remain in deep trouble, suffering their ninth defeat in 18 matches, leaving them firmly in the relegation zone.

This impressive win will serve as a massive confidence boost for Express as they continue their push for a strong finish to the season.

Express FC last won the Uganda Premier League title in 2021 with the returning Wasswa Bbosa as coach.
