The Uganda U20 Women’s Rugby team, also known as the Lady Cranes, have departed for South Africa to participate in the inaugural U20 African Series.
This historic moment marks the team’s first appearance on the international stage.
The team, consisting of 25 players and officials, was flagged off from Kyadondo by Uganda Rugby Union Secretary General, Peter Odong, who expressed pride in the team’s achievement.
“This is a proud moment for the entire rugby community in Uganda,” he said. “The opportunity for our young women to compete at this level is a testament to the strategic direction of the Union in terms of developing the game”
Under the guidance of Head Coach Brian Nabutaala Makalama, the team has been preparing for this moment.
“This tournament is a huge step forward for our young players,” Makalama stated. “The girls have shown incredible commitment and drive in their preparation, and I believe they will give a good account of themselves on the field”
The Lady Cranes will face Tunisia on October 4th before battling the Junior Springbok Women on October 8th in Stellenbosch.
The team’s participation in this tournament has been made possible through the generous contributions and support of various partners and well-wishers via the U20 Harambee campaign, which raised crucial funds to support the team’s
journey.
