Kumi 2-1 Victoria

Kumi University moved up to third place in Group B of the Pepsi University Football League after securing a crucial 2-1 victory over Victoria University on Tuesday, March 4, in Kumi.

The win, Kumi’s first of the campaign, breathed new life into their qualification hopes as they overtook Victoria in the group standings.

Early Drama as Kumi Strikes First

The match started at a blistering pace, with Kumi taking the lead just two minutes in. Alele Tom capitalized on a defensive lapse, nodding home a loose ball to send the home crowd into celebration.

Alele, who was a constant threat throughout the match, combined well with Muge moments later, but the latter’s first-time effort was superbly saved by Victoria goalkeeper Aine Newton.

Despite Kumi’s dominance in the opening exchanges, Victoria found a response in the 21st minute when Agaba Aldo slotted home a well-taken effort to level the score.

The visitors nearly took the lead seven minutes later, but Okedi squandered a golden opportunity, blazing his close-range shot over the bar.

As halftime approached, both teams pushed for an advantage. Ten minutes before the break, Okapel created space on the edge of the box but failed to trouble Aine Newton with his shot.

Three minutes before the whistle, Omega Kisaale burst down the right flank and fired from a tight angle, but his effort flew wide, ensuring the teams went into the break tied at 1-1.

Akora Restores Kumi’s Lead in the Second Half

Victoria came close to snatching the lead in the 55th minute when Aldo’s curling shot was brilliantly tipped over.

However, it was Kumi who made their pressure count. In the 62nd minute, Akora Joseph unleashed a powerful strike into the bottom right corner, restoring the hosts’ lead and reigniting their momentum.

With 20 minutes to play, Kumi kept up the pressure. Odeke split the Victoria defense with a perfectly timed through ball to Alele, but his first effort was saved, and his follow-up attempt was blocked.

Akora remained a menace, driving at the defense and setting up Alele, who in turn found Omega, but his shot from inside the box flew over the bar.

Victoria’s Late Push Falls Short

Victoria pushed for an equalizer in the 83rd minute when Mugerwa Reagan swung in a cross to Sekandi, but his shot narrowly missed the target.

With just two minutes left, Awadda tested Kumi goalkeeper Ajo David, who reacted well to push the ball out for a corner. From the resulting set piece, Mugerwa rose highest but sent his header over the bar, extinguishing Victoria’s last hope of salvaging a point.

What the Win Means for Kumi

The victory propelled Kumi University to third place in Group B with four points, leapfrogging Victoria, who now sit at the bottom with two points.

Ndejje leads the group with nine points, closely followed by Makerere with eight, as the battle for qualification intensifies.

Kumi will now look to build on this victory in their next fixture, while Victoria must regroup quickly to keep their hopes alive.
