Sports was once again a discussion on the floor of parliament as Hon. Dicksons Kateshumbwa presented a report by the Budget Committee on the request of extra funds amounting to over shs 4 trillion prioritizing payments for road construction firms and security reinforcements.

From this supplementary budget approved by parliament, over shs 257 billion is earmarked for completion of sports facilities in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which Uganda is set to co-host alongside neighbors Kenya and Tanzania.
Among the key projects is Hoima Stadium whose construction began in August last year, and according to its Turkish contractors SUMMA, it is almost halfway done with the main structure in place, and roofing scheduled for April 2025 expecting it to be complete within the set 20-month timeline.
Another is the 20,000 seater Akii Bua Stadium whose construction was flagged off by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in January and its completion is also timed to 20 months, with an approximate cost of shs 470 billion. The Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku is also receiving a facelift among other facilities.
Meanwhile, the hosting trio’s lack of readiness led to the postponement of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) which was also set to be hosted by the three East African Nations, originally scheduled for February but postponed to August 2025.
