The National Council of Sports ( NCS) has ordered the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) to suspend the 2021 National Basketball League (NBL) with immediate effect.

This is due to the high rate of COVID-19 infections across the country with the most upsurge being in Central Uganda and Kampala in particular, where the basketball league mostly takes place.

In a circular NCS. 3/4, NCS General  Secretary Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel wrote to the President of the FUBA informing him of the suspension of the league due to  an upsurge in the Covid-19 cases around the country.

The letter in parts read:-

“The main purpose of this letter  therefore is twofold , as follows:-

1) To inform you of this unfortunate development of the high rates of infection of the Covid19 pandemic, and the need for safety for all Ugandans.

2) To direct you to suspend with imediate effect, all planned fixtures/games for the 2021 Basketball League currently on-going in the country, until further notice.”

This is not the first time the NBL is suspended due to COVID-19 as it was also suspended last year after the government suspended all public gathering in Country in March.

The 2021 National Basketball league regular season was set to climax this weekend with five fixtures on the cards at the KIU Arena, Kasanga
