FC Bayern München may have been crowned Bundesliga champions with two games of the season to spare, but there is still one individual title up for grabs, with Robert Lewandowski looking to make even more history on Matchday 33.
His hattrick against Borussia Mönchengladbach took him to an incredible 39 goals for the season, leaving him just one shy of becoming only the second player in history to reach the magic milestone of 40 goals in a single season. Gerd Müller’s 1971/72 record is there for the taking, and with the title wrapped up, Bayern will do all they can to help The Best FIFA Men’s Player break that 49yearold record this Saturday when they travel to SC Freiburg.
Averaging a goal every 59 minutes, Lewandowski will fancy his chances of at least matching Müller this weekend, although SC Freiburg still has plenty to play for, as the race for places in Europe intensifies. Currently ninth, after a 41 win at 1. FC Köln, Christian Streich’s men are among a group of four teams vying for Germany’s berth in next season’s inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League, on offer to the team finishing seventh.
Borussia Mönchengladbach is currently on pole, but their 60 loss to Bayern has seen their advantage over 1. FC Union Berlin in the eighth cut to just a single goal, with both teams tied on 46 points. While the Foals remain masters of their own destiny, their opponents on Saturday are a VfB Stuttgart side who can narrow the gap to a single point with a win at Borussia Park, thus keeping their own hopes of European football alive.
Freiburg, who are sandwiched in between on 44 points, know victory would ensure they would head to Eintracht Frankfurt on the final day of the season still with a chance of finishing seventh, while Union has to navigate a tricky trip to Bayer 04 Leverkusen successfully to remain in the running.
Meanwhile, three clubs are still in the race for two UEFA Champions League qualifying berths alongside Bayern and RB Leipzig, and Frankfurt has the chance to lay an early marker when they travel to relegated FC Schalke 04 on Saturday, having slipped from fourth to fifth after being held by local rivals 1. FSV Mainz 05 last weekend. The Eagles trail Borussia Dortmund by a point and would be happy for a favour from Mainz on Sunday when they host the Westphalians.
VfL Wolfsburg, meanwhile, can all but put the seal on their place in the Champions League with a win at Leipzig in Julian Nagelsmann’s final home game in charge of Die Roten Bullen before his summer switch to Bayern. Oliver Glasner’s men lead fifthplaced Frankfurt by three points and have a tengoal superior goal difference, so realistically need just three points from their final two games of the season to return to the Champions League after a sixyear absence.

At the other end of the table, five clubs are still anxiously looking over their shoulders, as the spectre of relegation looms large. Four of them meet on what may be a makeorbreak weekend, with Hertha BSC Berlin hosting Köln and SV Werder Bremen travelling to FC Augsburg.

The home teams hold the advantage in both of those fixtures, with a win effectively ensuring their survival, but defeat would send them all into a nailbiting finalday showdown together with DSC Arminia Bielefeld, who need to beat TSG Hoffenheim on Saturday to boost their own hopes of securing a second straight season of Bundesliga football.
