Substitute goalkeeper Peter Katongole saved the decisive spot kick as Gomba overcame Busiro on penalties to reach finals of the 2020 Masaza Cup after a goalless draw at an outcast FUFA Technical Center, Njeru.

Katongole saved Kuteesa Malida’s spot kick to propel the lions to a 5-4 penalty win over last year’s finalists.

Busiro began the game the better side and had their first sight of goal in the 9th minute of the game after forward Usama Arafat made a tremendous run into the penalty area with only Gomba custodian Anguzu Francis to beat but his effort went narrowly off target.

Forward Gerrard Ogweti also had a chance to break the deadlock in the 20th minute but Busiro’s talisman could not get past Anguzu after the whole Gomba backline was well beaten by Julius Kazibwe’s through ball from a distance.

Gomba’s best opportunity in the first half fell to Isaac Musiima after his cornerkick from left nearly found the back of the net but Mutumba Adadi punched the curled ball away from danger.

Just before the end of the first half, Busiro brought on Kalibwami Hamza for Injuried Robert Ssentongo while at the beginning of the second half, Gomba made a double change, bringing on George Kiryowa and Derrick Mbowa for Colline Seruwu and Isaac Musiima respectively.

The best goalscoring chances in the second half also fell to Ogweti but the lethal forward couldn’t connect well with Usama’s squared ball in the 63rd minute.

Ahead of the spot kicks, both teams made goalkeeping changes. Busiro introduced Kirabira Juma for Mutumba Adadi while Anguzu Francis was taken off for Peter Katongole.

But it was Katongole who proved fruitful, saving Busiro’s first penalty which was taken by Kuteesa.

Charles Bbale, George Kiryowa, Kafeero Hamis, Bbowa Derrick and Ssentongo Derrick all had their penalties in the back of the net for Gomba.

After Kuteesa’s miss, Adriko, Kasule, Ogweti and Mubiru Desty all converted their penalties for Busiro.
