KCCA Netball Club edged record champions NIC 40–39 in a nail-biting encounter as the National Netball League made its long-awaited return at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.
The victory marked KCCA’s first league win over NIC since 2018, and it came in the opening game of the 2025 season, nearly two years since the league’s last action in April 2023.
The clash between the two giants lived up to its billing, delivering intensity and drama from start to finish. KCCA took a narrow 11–10 lead in the opening quarter, fueled by standout defensive performances from Shaffie Nalwanja and Christine Nakito.
Despite building a five-goal advantage in the second quarter, KCCA allowed NIC back into the game, going into halftime with a slim 19–18 lead.
NIC fought back in the third quarter, with centre player Margret Bagala leading a strong charge that saw NIC take their first lead and finish the quarter 30–27 ahead.
However, KCCA regrouped in the final period, even after being reduced to six players following Brenda Nakazibwe’s suspension.
NIC missed a golden opportunity to extend their lead, and two late errors by their wing attack Fildauce Namuleme opened the door for a KCCA comeback.
The teams were tied at 35–all with seven minutes to go, setting up a tense finale. In the dying seconds, KCCA converted a crucial centre pass to seal a dramatic 40–39 victory.
The league action continues next Saturday at Hamz Stadium with four matches on the card:
– UCU vs UGISHA
– UPDF vs UG X Luwero
– Prisons vs NIC
– KCCA vs Busia Greater Lions
