Kamwenge District Council has taken a significant step toward boosting sports development by offering land to the Uganda National Council of Sports (NCS) for the construction of sports facilities.
This move aligns with the government’s efforts to enhance sports infrastructure across the country.
On March 5, 2025, a delegation of over ten officials from Kamwenge District, located in the Rwenzori region, visited the Uganda National Council of Sports to benchmark sports facility development.
The team was led by Chief Administrative Officer Hanny Turyahebwa, District Chairman Joseph Karungi, and Sports Officer Melon Kyalisiima.
The visit included a guided tour of the existing NCS facilities, led by Sarah Chellangat. The delegation later met with the NCS General Secretary, who welcomed their proposal and acknowledged the importance of such initiatives in developing the sports sector.

During the meeting, the NCS General Secretary expressed appreciation for Kamwenge District’s initiative, highlighting the council’s mandate to collaborate with local governments in sports development.
“Our mandate as the National Council of Sports is to work closely with local governments in developing sports in our country. We have been lacking in the area of facilities, but we look forward to supporting Kamwenge District in establishing an international-standard facility,” he stated.
He also noted that only a few regions, including Masaka, Hoima, and Mbarara, have so far benefited from government funding for sports facility development. He emphasized that adequate infrastructure is crucial for talent identification and sports development.
Kamwenge District Local Council V Chairman Joseph Karungi expressed gratitude for the warm reception at NCS and was pleased with the positive response to their proposal.
“We are proud to receive such a warm welcome from NCS. Initially, we were considering a local-level facility, but this opportunity to develop an international-standard sports complex is fantastic,” he remarked.
District Sports Officer Melon Kyalisiima also shared her excitement, emphasizing the district’s vision for a multi-sport facility.
“We are looking forward to having multiple sports complexes in Kamwenge. We have land available, and we want facilities that can accommodate a minimum of 15 sports disciplines,” she stated.
Currently, Kamwenge District has only one sports complex located in Rwamwanja.
However, local leaders believe that this is not enough to fully tap into the sports potential of the region.
With the support of NCS, they hope to establish a facility that can nurture and develop talent from Kamwenge and the entire Rwenzori region.
This initiative marks a major milestone in the district’s sports development agenda and, if implemented, will provide young athletes with better training facilities and opportunities to compete at higher levels.
