Jane Asinde shines as Gazelles beat Kenya in FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Zone V Qualifiers

Jane Asinde was the standout performer, scoring a game high of 24 points and grabbing 9 rebounds as Uganda’s women’s basketball team, the Gazelles, cruised to a dominant 78-56 victory over Kenya in their opening game at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Zone V qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt.

Uganda took control early, leading from start to finish.

They drew first blood, with Kenya struggling to hold onto possession in the opening minutes, which set the tone for the rest of the game.

Kenya managed to score their first point with a free throw after a foul, but at the end of the first quarter, Uganda had built a comfortable 23-11 lead.

The Gazelles continued to dominate, extending their lead to 12 points by halftime, thanks to their solid defense and effective transition play.

Kenya struggled with turnovers, unable to maintain possession for long stretches.

Kenya made a brief push in the third quarter, cutting into Uganda’s lead in the early minutes.

However, after a timeout, Uganda regained their composure and extended their advantage.

A key 3-pointer from Nanvubya Shakira late in the third quarter pushed Uganda’s lead to 20 points, with the score at 57-37 heading into the final period.

By the 7:54 mark of the fourth quarter, Uganda’s lead had swelled to 25 points, effectively sealing the win.

The biggest lead in the game was 28 points and it came in the final quarter however later Kenya tries to close in

Captain Jane Asinde was crucial in securing possession for Uganda, while Paige Robinson contributed 15 points and 2 rebounds, spinning past Kenyan defenders with ease to provide an additional spark.

In Kenya’s team, Victoria Reynlords scored 13 points, but her efforts were not enough to secure a victory for her side.

With this impressive victory under their belts, the Gazelles will look to carry this momentum into their next game against hosts Egypt, scheduled for Tuesday at 7:00 PM Kampala time.
