The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has officially announced Ghana as the host nation for the CAF African Schools Football Championship 2025 Continental Finals, set to take place from April 21 to 26, 2025.
The highly anticipated tournament will be held at the Legon Sports Stadium at the University of Ghana in Accra. This marks the first time the championship finals will be hosted in West Africa, following previous editions in South Africa (2023) and Tanzania (2024).
Launched in April 2022 by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe in Mozambique, the CAF African Schools Football Championship has grown into Africa’s largest youth sports mobilization program. Over 1.96 million boys and girls from 46 countries have participated in the initiative.
With support from the Motsepe Foundation, which donated USD 10 million, CAF has invested in various legacy projects in schools, including infrastructure upgrades, library construction, and other community-driven developments. The prize structure for the competition is as follows:
- Winners: USD 300,000
- Runners-up: USD 200,000
- Third place: USD 150,000
For the 2024/25 season, 46 countries fielded their national school teams in Zonal Qualifiers, held between October 2024 and January 2025. The six CAF Zonal Champions, along with the defending champions from the 2023/24 edition and hosts Ghana, will compete in the Continental Finals.
Uganda will be represented by St. Mary’s Boarding School Kitende and St. Noa Girl’s School.
CAF Director of Member Associations, Sarah Mukuna, expressed excitement about the upcoming event, stating:
“We are thrilled to bring the CAF African Schools Football Championship to Ghana, a tournament that continues to inspire young talent across Africa. With partners like CANAL+, we are taking this competition to new heights, supporting the next generation of football stars while promoting education and skill development. We look forward to a tournament filled with passion, talent, and growth.”
In addition to the competition, the championship includes a comprehensive capacity-building program for young players, coaches, and educators, offering:
- CAF D License Coaching Course
- Safeguarding Workshops
- Safety and Security Training
- Young Medical Officers Program
- Young Referees Program
- Young Reporters Program
The matches will be played at the state-of-the-art 10,000-seater Legon Sports Stadium, originally constructed for the 2023 African Games. The venue also features excellent off-pitch facilities to support CAF’s various training and development programs.
