Chesang sets new national record at the 2022 World Athletics Championships

Ugandan Stella Chesang set a new National Record in the Women’s 10,000m race on a Saturday evening at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, Oregon.

Despite Chesang running a 31:01.04 time, she missed out on the podium appearance, finishing 14th. Chesang won gold in the 10,000m at the 2018 Commonwealth games

Chesang broke Sarah Chelangat’s record that was set on 10th October 2020 at the FBK After Summer Competitions in Hengelo, Netherlands running a set 31:01.04.

Letesenbet Gidey (Ethiopia) holds the World Record for the Women’s 10,000m and won gold in the 2022 WAC in the same race on Saturday in a time of 30:09.94.

About the other runners representing Uganda at the Championships, 

Winnie Nanyondo qualified for the semi-finals after finishing outside the top six in her third heat who earns automatic qualification.

While Peruth Chemutai finished fifth in heat two of the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase to qualify to the final as one of the next fastest six.

On Sunday evening, Joshua Cheptegei will also be in action for Uganda in the Men’s 10,000m race at the 2022 World Athletics Championships at 11pm EAT.

But before Cheptegei’s race, Jackson Kiprop, Fred Musobo and Filex Chemonges will be in action at the Marathon  4:15pm. Kiprop finished 10th twice in 2013 Moscow and 2015 Beijing, with Kiprotich winning the last one.
