CAF Champions League: Express bows out after defeat to Al Merrikh

Uganda Premier League champions Express FC have bowed out of the CAF Champions League

This is after they lost 1-0 to Al Merrikh in the second leg of their preliminary round tie away in Sudan.

Despite winning the first leg and the 2-2 aggregate, the Red Eagles has been eliminated by away goals rule.

The all important goal for Al Merrikh was netted by Ahmed Hamid Al-Tash in the 73rd minute when he ran onto a Bakri Abdi through ball.

Express were toothless upfront save for Martin Kizza and George Ssenkaaba effort that went off-mark in the second half.

While Al Merrikh had two chances before they scored but Ahmed Adam was denied by Joel Mutakubwa and Isaac Abdelrahman effort rattled the crossbar with Mutakubwa well-beaten.

Al Merrikh will now face Zambia’s Zanaco in the next round while Express will return home on Monday to prepare for the Uganda Cup semifinal tie with BUL on Thursday.
