Uganda's women basketball team, the Gazelles withdrawn from AfroBasket qualifers by FUBA due to financial crisis

The Uganda Women’s Basketball team, The Gazelles have withdrawn from the Upcoming FIBA AfroBasket Zone five qualifiers in Kigali.

FUBA confirmed the development in a press release on Monday evening citing the failure to secure financial support from the government.

“The Federation of Uganda Basketball Association has today, unfortunately, made a difficult and painful decision to withdraw its participation from the AfroBasket qualifiers (Women) that will take place between 12th-17th July 201, after having confirmed its participation to FIBA” read in parts the circular.

“A decision has been reached after failing to get the much needed financial support from the government”

FUBA wrote to NCS on June 2 asking for Sh1.2bn to cater for the Gazelles, Silverbacks and U16 team engagements but their plea was turned down as NCS General Secretary Bernard Ogwel said that Government’s priority was on preparing team Uganda for the upcoming Olympics games in Tokyo.
