Uganda’s Beach Soccer National team suffered a disappointing defeat to hosts Senegal in the opening game of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) beach soccer finals.
The defending champions defeated Uganda 5-1 in the day’s only game in Group A, to perhaps send out a message to their rivals as they look to win the tournament for the third time in succession and the sixth time in their history.
Just three teams now feature in Group A following the withdrawal of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with Tanzania starting their campaign against Uganda tomorrow.
The first of the day’s Group B games saw Mozambique register a surprise 7-5 win over Egypt, who are looking to improve on the third-place finishes they have achieved at the last two editions of the tournament.
The day’s other game in the group saw Morocco, considered one of the favorites for the event, overcome the Seychelles 5-1.
All games are being played at the Saly Beach Soccer Stadium, a temporary facility constructed especially for this competition.
The stadium has a capacity for 1,000 spectators, with strict health protocols in place throughout the competition due to the coronavirus pandemic.
