Cheikhou Kouyate and Ismaila Sarr came off the bench to settle it for Senegal as they defeated Equatorial Guinea 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
With the victory, they prevailed into the semi-finals of the tournament where they will verse Burkina Faso.
Equatorial Guinea gave Senegal a serious test, threatened to win it completely at one point, but the Lions of Teranga came through with a victory.
Equatorial Guinea were awarded a penalty in the second half before the decision was overturned, but then equalised soon after through Jannick Buyla’s low shot but before all that forward Famara Diedhiou had put Senegal ahead with a first time strike following Sadio Mane’s pass.
Less than five minutes after coming in, Substitute Cheikhou Kouyate restored Senegal’s lead with a neat volley.
Another sub, Watford’s Sarr got Senegal’s third of the game before the end of the game after magnificent play down the left flank by Sadio Mane to set up Sarr for his second assist for the night.
Equatorial Guinea had been hoping to cause an upset against this Senegal side not only because of their reaction after the game but also their reaction when they went down by one goal.
The result means the 20th ranked team on the FIFA World Rankings will face Burkina Faso in the semi-finals.
