Women’s Derby 2022: Watoto Wasoka partners with La Liga

Under the theme “Break the bias”, Watoto Wasoka has partnered with  La-Liga (Spanish top division) to support women’s football in Uganda through the Women’s Derby 2022 event.

This event was officially announced on Wednesday, 23rd February 2022 by the Kampala based NGO and will take place at Old Kampala Senior Secondary School starting.

It will run for three days starting from Saturday 5th, March to Tuesday 8th, March 2022.

“We are very excited to announce that Spanish top division “La Liga” is partnering with Watoto Wasoka to support the “Women’s Derby 2022” next weekend.” a statement release to the media read.

The partnership will see more than 40 girls’ teams from two different categories, U-15 and the open group.

The Women’s Derby is an annual football tournament that celebrates girls and women football as well as the International Women’s Day; through the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more inclusive future through football.

Now in its second year, the 2022 edition will bring together more than 40 girls’ football teams for three days in Kampala.

In the first edition, Dream Girls Soccer Academy emerged champions of the Inaugural U15 tournament of the Watoto Wasoka Women`s Derby after defeating Sisters Women In Sports. Ritah Winyenze and Jeldah Nanyonjo scored the important goals to put Dream Girl Soccer Academy in the books of record as the winners of first edition of the tournament.

And The Ladies from Masindi too lifted the trophy of Inaugural Women’s Derby in open category. The Fred Musiime coached side beat She Maroons 4-2 via penalty shootouts following an intensive and epic one all draw in open play final.

Best performers of the tournament in the first edition were;
  • Best Coach (open) – Sida Alex Olowo (She Maroons)
  • Best Coach (Junior)- Mukiibi Isma (Dream Girls)
  • Best Goalkeeper (open)- Adongo Brenda (She Maroons)
  • Best Goalkeeper (Junior)- Zulaika Never (Dream Girls)
  • Top Scorer (Open)- Fauzila Ikwaput of Lady Doves (4goals)
  • Top Scorer (Junior)- Wanyenze Ritah of Dream Girls (5girls)
  • Most Valuable Player (open)- Nabbosa Riticia (Lady Doves FC)
  • Most Valuable Player (Junior)- Naiga Patricia (Wakiso Hills)
  • Winner open category – Lady Doves FC
  • Winner- Junior – Dream Girls.

And this time round, prizes to be won will include trophies, medals and jerseys. For every participant, there will be a free pack of menstrual pads provided. The teams will also get free meals and refreshments at the playing venue.

All these endeavors are intended to lure the girl child take on the football sport under the theme; “Break the Bias!”.
