Wanderers won by 25 runs

Wanderers Cricket Club finally registered their first win of the season with a 25-run victory over arch-rivals Rounders in a thrilling encounter at the Lugogo Cricket Oval.

Wanderers’ squad, bolstered by the inclusion of Vamsi Krishna—the latest addition to the Cricket Cranes setup—showed renewed intent and depth and this was an initial shocker for Rounders who thought that Wanderers might not make a playing eleven.

After winning the toss, Wanderers chose to bat first. Openers Wassim Butt (26) and Perry Wazombe (59 off 39) gave them a solid start.

The partnership was broken in the ninth over when Brian Masaba took a well-judged catch at long-on to dismiss Wassim.

By the end of the powerplay, Wanderers were in a strong position at 53/1.

Perry followed soon after, caught by Anorld Tembo off Daudi Mwesigwa’s bowling.

Vamsi Krishna, making his debut for the club, had a stroke of luck early on—he was dropped by Jonathan Nyiro at long-off when he was on just 6 runs.

He went on to score a valuable 58, although his dismissal stalled Wanderers’ momentum.

A mix-up between Jaffer Ochaya and captain Ivan Kakande resulted in the latter’s runout, deepening the Wanderers’ troubles.

Despite a promising platform at 187/5, the team collapsed, losing their last five wickets for just 22 runs and getting bowled out for 209 in 39 overs.

In response, Rounders struggled to build momentum.

Reagan Puwata, who has been in fine form recently, fell for just 8, mistiming a pull shot that was caught by Jaffer Ochaya.

Narinder Singh(48) played a steady role, rotating the strike well, and helped Rounders reach 55/2 at the end of the power play.

However, the batting from Calvin Watuwa and the eventual dismissal of Narinder shifted the game in Wanderers’ favor.

Rounders needed just 33 runs with one wicket in hand and 42 balls remaining, but pressure mounted.

Jonnathan Nyiiro’s attempt to keep going in the game with a six ended in disappointment, as he was caught in the deep—ending Rounders’ chase at 184 and handing Wanderers a hard-fought 25-run victory.

Despite the win, the result does not change much for Wanderers, who remain at the bottom of the table.

Looking ahead, Wanderers will face Avengers in their next fixture, while Rounders take on JACC in the much-anticipated Jinja Derby.
