Wakiso Giants FC have officially parted company with head coach Steven Bengo following a disappointing 2024/25 season that ended in relegation from the Uganda Premier League.

The club made the announcement on June 18 through a formal statement, confirming the end of Bengo’s tenure an plans to rebuild after a dismal campaign.

“Wakiso Giants can confirm that their head coach Steven Bengo has left his position following the conclusion of the 2024/25 season. The decision comes after a difficult campaign in which the club was relegated to the FUFA Big League, finishing with 20 points from 30 matches, recording just 3 wins and 11 draws,” the statement read in part.

Bengo’s sacking comes as little surprise after the Purple Sharks endured one of their worst seasons since earning promotion to the top flight in 2019/20. The club managed only three victories throughout the season and finished with the fewest wins in the league.

Despite the poor performance, the club acknowledged Bengo’s commitment during a turbulent period.

“While the outcome is deeply disappointing for everyone associated with Wakiso Giants, we recognize and appreciate Coach Bengo’s dedication, passion, and tireless efforts during his tenure,” the club added.

Steven Bengo, a former Uganda Cranes midfielder, was appointed head coach in June 2024 on a three-year deal, with former teammate Tonny Mawejje serving as his assistant. However, the duo struggled to find consistent form and results, culminating in the club’s drop to the second division.

With relegation confirmed, the decision to cut ties with Bengo was widely expected. The club has already announced plans to commence the search for a new technical team, as it seeks an immediate return to the Uganda Premier League.

In addition to the coaching shake-up, Wakiso Giants are also expected to face a wave of player departures. Winger Hudson Mbalire has reportedly joined NEC FC, while midfield mainstay Rahmat Senfuka and other key players are also rumoured to be on their way out.

This marks the end of Wakiso Giants’ six-year stay in the top flight, a journey that began with optimism in 2019 but has recently been marred by inconsistency and underperformance.

As the club prepares for life in the FUFA Big League, fans and stakeholders alike will be watching closely to see how the rebuild unfolds — both on the bench and on the pitch.
