SC Villa claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over traditional rivals Express FC in a Uganda Premier League clash at Luzira on Saturday.

A second-half penalty from Patrick Jonah Kakande sealed the win, avenging their previous results against Express.

The decisive moment came when Express defender Ashraf Mbazira handled the ball inside the box, allowing Kakande to confidently convert from the spot.

Despite dominating possession, Villa struggled to carve out clear-cut chances, but their resilience at the back ensured they held on for a crucial three points.

Express had multiple opportunities to equalize but failed to capitalize. Muhammad Kagawa, playing against his former club, squandered a golden chance with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Richard Basangwa also came close, volleying just inches wide, while Geoffrey Gagganga’s powerful effort was denied by Villa’s goalkeeper, Norman Angufidru, who pulled off a crucial double save.

The victory marks SC Villa’s first win of the second round, following a 1-1 draw against Wakiso Giants.

The result lifts them to 24 points after 27 matches, just one point behind Express in the standings.

Despite the historical significance of the derby, the game lacked its usual intensity and was played in front of a sparse crowd.

Nonetheless, SC Villa will take pride in securing three crucial points as they look to build momentum for the remainder of the season.

Other game of the day saw URA also edge Maroons 1-0 in Nakivubo through a Moses Aliro goal.
