NEC FC edged Bright Stars to comfortably move top of the Uganda Premier League with 1-0 at MTN Omondi Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Paul Mucureezi netted the whole important goal for the Die Hards slotting the ball home from spot.
Each side had a couple of chances on goal but Muzamiru Mutyaba nearly scored for NEC FC just 11th minutes into the game.
Six (6) minutes to halftime, defender Patrick Bayiga held the ball in the box only to award Bright Stars with a penalty.
However Bright Stars’ Nelson Ssenkatuka who is not having the best of seasons missed a penalty which was saved by goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo at the stroke of halftime in very tight game.
With not a lot left, NEC FC too got a penalty which was converted by an on-form Mucureezi who has stood tall on the important and decisive moments.
The result took NEC FC top of the table on 26 points, two above second placed Vipers SC who play BUL FC on Saturday whereas Bright Stars FC stay bottom on six points.
In their next games, NEC will play away in Najjembe against BUL on 18th December as Bright stars host UPDF on the same day.
The other game of the day saw Hilary Adima level matters for Asaph Mwebaze’s Mbale Heroes side away in Bombo in the 84th minute to end the game 1-1 after Samuel Ssekamate Kayongo had scored just 19 minutes into the opening half.
