Uganda Premier League
- Express 0-2 BUL
- Lugazi 1-0 Police
- Maroons 1-1 Bright Stars
BUL FC marked the start of the Uganda Premier League second round with a commanding 2-0 victory over Express FC at Nakivubo Stadium on Wednesday.
Two first-half goals secured maximum points for the visitors, propelling them to sixth place with 23 points, while Express endured a nightmarish start to their campaign.
The game took an unfortunate turn for Express early on when their captain, Emmanuel Alex Wasswa, inadvertently turned Nicholas Mwere’s delivery into his own net in the 13th minute. This gave BUL the lead and set the tone for a dominant first half.
Express had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 21st minute when new signing Muhammad Kagawa was played through by Richard Basangwa. However, Kagawa failed to beat BUL’s goalkeeper, Joel Mutakubwa, in what proved to be a wasted chance for the Red Eagles.
The visitors capitalized on their momentum and extended their lead before halftime. George Kasonko orchestrated a brilliant move, setting up Hillary Onek, whose precise pass found Pascal Ngobi. Ngobi made no mistake, slotting the ball home from close range in the 40th minute to make it 2-0 for BUL.
Express’ misfortunes continued as they had a penalty appeal dismissed after a suspected handball in the area. Their troubles deepened when striker Sam Ssenyonjo was forced off due to injury in the 30th minute.
At halftime, goalkeeper Emmanuel Kalyowa was also substituted for Michael Kagiri in an attempt to turn the tide.
Despite BUL’s control of the game, they had chances to further extend their lead, with Martin Aprem and Richard Okello both missing opportunities. Nevertheless, their two first-half goals were enough to seal the win.
The defeat leaves Express in third place with 24 points, now trailing league leaders Vipers by 12 points.
Their position remains under threat, as KCCA, also on 24 points, could leapfrog them with a positive result against NEC on Thursday at Lugogo.
For BUL, this victory marks their fifth win of the season and strengthens their push for the top spots.
Their disciplined performance and clinical finishing in the first half were key in securing this important away victory.
