Allan Okello punished former employers KCCA FC, as Vipers further cemented their position at the top of the Startimes Uganda Premier League with a commanding 2-0 victory on Matchday 17. The win extended their lead to three points, strengthening their title charge as the season progresses.

Vipers Dominate Under the Lights

Playing under the floodlights at MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo, Vipers SC showcased their attacking prowess, dictating play from the onset. Their dominance paid off in the 29th minute when Yunus Sentamu opened the scoring in style.

Midfielder Joel Sseunjogi delivered a pinpoint long ball, which was expertly controlled by Karim Watambala before he set up Sentamu. The forward then curled a stunning effort past KCCA’s goalkeeper Mugolofa, giving the visitors a deserved lead.

Allan Okello Haunts His Former Side

Just a minute later, former KCCA star Allan Okello doubled Vipers’ advantage in dramatic fashion. A long clearance from Nicholas Wadada was miscontrolled by KCCA captain Filbert Obenchan, allowing Okello to capitalize on the mistake. The forward wasted no time, smashing the ball past the helpless Mugolofa to silence his former home crowd.

The goal marked Okello’s 14th strike of the season, further solidifying his position as the league’s top scorer and a crucial player in the Venom’s title bid.

KCCA’s Second-Half Fightback Falls Short

Despite a dismal first-half performance, KCCA FC came out fighting in the second half, making tactical substitutions that injected fresh energy into their attack. The introduction of Shafik Nana Kwikiriza and Bright Anukani provided a much-needed spark, leading to multiple goal-scoring opportunities.

Defender Mubezi forced a brilliant save from Vipers’ goalkeeper Alfred Mudekereza, while midfielder Saidi Mayanja missed a crucial chance to pull one back.

Controversy struck in the closing stages when KCCA’s striker Sadat Anaku appeared to be brought down in the penalty box by Vipers defender Hilary Mukundane, but the referee waved away KCCA’s appeals, leaving the home side frustrated.

Vipers Extend Their Lead at the Top

Vipers SC held firm to secure all three points, extending their tally to 40 points—three ahead of second-placed NEC FC, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Police FC in Kavumba.

Meanwhile, KCCA FC suffered their second consecutive defeat of the second round, leaving them in sixth place with 24 points.

What’s Next?

Vipers SC will look to maintain their momentum when they host Mbarara City on March 2, while KCCA FC will aim to bounce back when they visit Maroons on the same day.

Elsewhere in the UPL:
  • Lugazi FC edged Wakiso Giants 1-0 in a tightly contested encounter.
  • BUL FC delivered a dominant performance, thrashing Mbale Heroes 3-0.
  • NEC FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Police FC, losing ground in the title race.

With the league heating up, Vipers continue to show their championship credentials, while KCCA must regroup quickly to avoid falling further behind.
