Uganda’s Boxing Triumph at the Inaugural WBC Amateur Africa Championship

A Boxing Team from Uganda, made a remarkable debut at the first-ever WBC Amateur Africa Championship, held from February 6th to 8th at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall in Lagos, Nigeria.

With an intention of offering valuable international experience to African Boxers, African Boxing Union President Houcine Houichi who labeled this as a vital tournament for the development of young boxers managed help the continent to witness extensive young raw skill including that from East Africa particularly Uganda.

Competing against 42 boxers from eight African nations, including Kenya, Togo, Senegal, Ghana, Mali, Cameroon, and Nigeria, Uganda’s team earned impressive recognition, securing six medals—three silver and three bronze.

While Nigeria dominated the tournament across all weight categories, Uganda’s athletes made a significant impact, with the Uganda medals coming from two key clubs: Zebra Boxing Club and COBAP Boxing Club.

Among the standout performances, were Zebra Boxing Club’s Isaac Zebra Ssenyange Junior and Shakur Mugambe.

Ssenyange Junior earned a bronze in the welterweight category, and Mugambe won silver in the light welterweight division.

Other medalists included Batte Nuhu (silver), Muduwa Brenda (silver), Balyejusa Benon (bronze), and Muleme Katabula (bronze) were all from Coach Lola Kalyango’s COBAP.

Muduwa was the only female medalist for Uganda, securing silver in the flyweight category.

COBAP Boxing Club particularly excelled, earning four medals: two silvers from Muduwa and Nuhu, and two bronzes from Muleme and Benon in the flyweight and welterweight categories.

Although not all Ugandan boxers clinched medals, Moses Kimera and Fatuma Nabikolo narrowly missed podium finishes, placing 4th and 5th in their respective weight divisions.
