The Ugandan motorsport fraternity and business community are in mourning following the untimely death of Rajiv Ruparelia, a prominent businessman and rally driver, who passed away on May 3, 2025, at the age of 35. Rajiv, the only son of billionaire Sudhir Ruparelia, died in a tragic car accident on the Kampala Southern Bypass.

According to reports, Rajiv was driving a high-performance Nissan GTR when he lost control and overturned at the Busabala Flyover in Makindye-Ssabagabo, Wakiso District. The vehicle burst into flames upon impact, leading to his immediate death. The accident occurred just hours before he was scheduled to serve as a groomsman at his best friend’s wedding, adding a poignant note to the tragedy.

Rajiv was not only a successful businessman, serving as the managing director of the Ruparelia Group, but also a passionate sportsman. He actively participated in various sports, including golf, rugby, and motorsport. His rallying career spanned six years, during which he made significant contributions to the sport in Uganda. He was also the chairperson of the Board of Trustees for the Central Motor Club (CMC) and launched the “Rally Support” fan engagement campaign.

Beyond his professional achievements, Rajiv was known for his philanthropic efforts. As a trustee of the Ruparelia Foundation, he directed over UGX 35 billion (approximately USD 9.5 million) to various causes, including disaster relief, sports development, and wildlife conservation. His flagship initiative, the Talent Scholarship Programme, awarded over 3,000 scholarships to underprivileged students.

Rajiv’s sudden demise has left a void in both the business and sports sectors in Uganda. Tributes have poured in from various quarters, with many highlighting his contributions to the country’s development and his passion for uplifting others. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations.

He is survived by his wife, Naiya Khagram Ruparelia, and their daughter. The nation mourns the loss of a visionary leader, a sports enthusiast, and a philanthropist whose impact was felt across multiple sectors.
