The Uganda U17 national team advanced to the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2025 in Doha, Qatar, after defeating Senegal 1–0 in the Round of 32 on Monday. The result marks another historic achievement for the Cubs in their first-ever appearance at the tournament.
Uganda took the lead in the 14th minute through midfielder Abubakar Walusimbi, who fired a powerful shot from outside the penalty area. The effort beat Senegal goalkeeper Vincent Gomis and put the CECAFA champions ahead in front of an enthusiastic Ugandan crowd at the Aspire Zone Complex.

Senegal dominated much of the match, attacking in numbers as they attempted to level the score. However, Uganda goalkeeper Edrisah Waibi delivered an outstanding performance, making several key saves to deny the Young Lions of Teranga.
After halftime, Senegal came close again through Babacar Bousso and Bakary Sonko, but Uganda’s defence remained firm.
With 10 minutes left, Senegal thought they had equalised, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review.
The final whistle sparked celebrations among the Ugandan players and supporters as the team eliminated the African U-17 champions. The victory follows Uganda’s 1–0 win over 2001 world champions France in their final Group K match.
Uganda head coach Brian Ssenyondo expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance.
“I am very happy that we beat a tough side like Senegal,” he said. “I must credit our goalkeeper who kept us in the game because he was very outstanding. The other players also kept to the instructions.”
Ssenyondo added that while the team would enjoy the moment, the focus would quickly shift to the next round.

Uganda will now face Germany in the Round of 16. This marks the nation’s deepest progression in its debut appearance at a FIFA U-17 World Cup.
