Uganda U-19 won by 50 runs

Uganda’s U19 team claimed a 50-run victory over Tanzania at the iconic Lugogo Cricket Oval, extending their lead to 2-1 in the Easter Youth 50-Over Series.

The match was a thrilling encounter where Uganda’s solid batting and effective bowling made all the difference.

Tanzania won the toss and chose to bowl first, but their decision backfired as Uganda set a formidable target.

Uganda made two changes to their lineup, bringing in Okecho Jordan and Aziz Abdul Tandia to replace Musa Majid and Gurjivan Singh.

This change was part of the team’s strategy to test different combinations in the tournament.

Uganda’s batting started off strong, with the openers safely navigating the first powerplay. By the end of the first 10 overs, Uganda had reached 38 without losing a wicket.

However, in the 11th over, the partnership of 41 was broken as Uganda lost two quick wickets.

Despite this, the innings continued to build momentum, and the middle order delivered key partnerships.

A 67-run partnership followed, but it came to an end when Olipa Gerald was dismissed after a crucial half-century, scoring 63 runs.

The late-order contribution from Ocen Peter and Nyiro Jonathan was vital.

The pair put together a vital 85-run partnership, taking Uganda past the 250-run mark and ensuring they played out their full 50 overs.

Uganda posted a total of 261/6, which looked like a challenging target for Tanzania.

In reply, Tanzania started well with an opening partnership of 61 runs, but their progress was halted when captain Dylan Thakar was dismissed just two runs shy of a half-century.

Acrey Pascal Hugo’s 58 runs were the highlight of Tanzania’s innings, alongside valuable contributions from Dylan Manish Tharkar (48) and Mohammad Simba Mbaki (31).

Despite these efforts, Tanzania was eventually bowled out for 211 runs in 46.1 overs, falling short of the target by 50 runs.

Uganda’s bowlers played a key role in their victory, with Aziz Abdul Tandia taking 3 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 2.9, while Christopher Kidega also claimed 3 wickets.

Uganda’s captain, Gerald Olipa, added 2 wickets to his earlier half-century, earning him the Player of the Match award.

The tournament resumes tomorrow, with Tanzania Under-19 taking on the Uganda Emerging Side at the Lugogo Cricket Oval.
