Uganda secured a coveted spot in the next phase of the Softball Women’s World Cup qualifiers after a composed and commanding run at the African continental tournament in Nairobi.
The team clinched the African runner-up position behind continental giants South Africa, marking one of their strongest regional campaigns to date.
Uganda delivered its most emphatic statement in the final game, overpowering hosts Kenya 14–3 at Jomo Kenyatta University.
The victory capped a spirited tournament that began on November 28 and highlighted the team’s growing tactical maturity and competitive fire on the international stage.
Although Uganda endured a tough 0–12 loss to South Africa earlier in the tournament, the players rebounded with poise and determination.
Their decisive triumph over Kenya not only restored momentum but also secured the second—and final—African qualification slot for the global stage.
South Africa finished as champions of the event, with Kenya settling for third despite the support of home fans.
With the continental chapter closed, Uganda now shifts focus to the global qualifiers scheduled for June or July 2026.
The team will travel to Peru, the Czech Republic, and the United States to take on some of the world’s top softball nations in pursuit of a historic World Cup berth.
Reflecting on the achievement, John Bosco Ssempa, president of the Uganda Baseball and Softball Association (UBASA), said
we are happy for the performance that the women have put up, defeating their East African neighbors.
We now shift focus to the next round of qualification and we hope the ladies make it to the World Cup.
He added,
“It is a great achievement in my tenure, and I hope we can do well—win the qualifier, advance to the World Cup, and play with the best softball-playing nations in the world.”
Uganda’s journey continues, and with momentum on their side, the dream of World Cup glory feels more tangible than ever.
