The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has addressed allegations of sexual harassment within the sport following a report published by New Vision on March 12, 2025 by Maureen Nakatude.
In a statement issued by Hon. Secretary Peter Odong, URU reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all players.
Thunderbirds player Yvonne Najjuma opened up to Nakatude about the sexual advances from male coaches who use playing time as a scare crow tool towards those who say no to them.
“I can say that some female players face a lot of discrimination from their coaches. You find that a coach prefers certain players, and however much you try to impress them, they cannot spot your excellent skills and performances.” Said Najjuma
The governing body emphasized that it does not take such claims lightly and has launched an independent investigation to establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
URU also urged individuals with relevant information to come forward through appropriate channels.
“As the governing body of rugby in Uganda, URU upholds the values of integrity, respect, and discipline,” the statement read.
“We remain dedicated to fostering a culture where all individuals feel safe and supported in the game.”
