SC Villa makes its much-anticipated return to Mutesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku, for their upcoming Uganda Premier League (UPL) fixture against Maroons FC. The match, originally slated for Saturday, March 8, has been rescheduled to Sunday, March 9, due to the AFCON U17 Women Qualifiers between Uganda and Kenya at Nakivubo Stadium.
Villa’s Temporary Relocation & Homecoming
SC Villa, the most successful club in Ugandan football history, had been forced to play their recent home games at Prisons Grounds, Luzira, as Wankulukuku Stadium underwent renovations. The upgrades are in preparation for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which Uganda is set to co-host in August.
Despite playing away from their traditional home, the defending league champions adapted well, securing crucial victories against URA FC and Express FC at Luzira. Their return to Wankulukuku now offers them a chance to reignite their home advantage as they seek to climb higher up the UPL standings.
Villa’s Home Record & League Standings
Villa has been formidable at home, going unbeaten in their last nine league matches at Wankulukuku, with six wins and three draws. Their last league game at the stadium ended in a 1-1 draw against Police FC.
Heading into the clash against Maroons, Villa sits in 8th place with 24 points, just one point ahead of Maroons, who are 9th. A victory could see them leapfrog several teams, keeping them within touching distance of the top contenders.
Maroons’ Challenge & Wankulukuku’s Uncertain Future
Interestingly, Maroons FC has also been using Luzira Prisons Ground as their home venue. With both teams accustomed to playing at the same temporary venue, it remains unclear whether Villa’s return to Wankulukuku is permanent or if the club will have to switch venues again depending on CHAN preparations.
Maroons, known for their defensive discipline, will pose a tough challenge for Villa, but the Jogoos will be banking on home support to push them to victory.
What’s at Stake?
This game is crucial for both teams, as a win for SC Villa could push them into the top six, while Maroons will be eager to overtake Villa and solidify their position in the mid-table. With Wankulukuku reopening its doors, fans will be eager to see if Villa’s return to their traditional home ground will reignite their title charge.
