At a function held at the National Council of Sports offices in Lugogo, the president of the Uganda Table Tennis Association expressed pride and excitement as Uganda’s women’s table tennis team officially marked the country’s return to the World Table Tennis Championships (WTTC) after a 15-year absence.
Since the WTTC introduced a qualification system, Uganda had struggled to meet the criteria and had not been able to participate.
However, thanks to the outstanding performances of players Jemimah Nakawala and Parvin Judith Nangonzi throughout 2024, Uganda has successfully qualified and will now compete in one of the sport’s top global events.
The players earned their qualification points through strong showings at key tournaments, including the Regional Senior Championship held in Kampala in April 2024, the All Africa Games held in Ghana in March, and the Africa Senior Championships in Ethiopia in October 2024.
We take this opportunity to commend Jemimah and Parvin for their dedication and exceptional results.
Notably, they secured a gold medal at the Regional Senior Championships and a bronze medal at the Africa Senior Championships.
The latter was a historic achievement, marking Uganda’s first continental medal in 25 years.
Their qualification is a result of three core values: a deep love for table tennis, relentless hard work, and exemplary discipline.
We extend our sincere thanks to their coaches, Alvin Katumba and Tendo Mary Balyewunya, for their unwavering commitment to developing the players.
Special appreciation also goes to three-time Olympian Mary Musoke, whose support for Nakasero Table Tennis Club—where both players train—has been instrumental.
Mary has contributed to the club through coach remuneration, equipment, and various resources that ensure consistent and high-quality training.
We are also grateful to the Government of Uganda, including Parliament and the National Council of Sports (NCS), for providing essential funding and continued support.
Our strong collaboration with NCS has opened up tremendous opportunities for our athletes.
The team is scheduled to depart for Doha, Qatar tomorrow, Friday, 16th May, aboard Qatar Airways.
They will return on 25th May after the conclusion of the WTTC
