Uganda’s Cricket Cranes head coach, Abhay Sharma, shared his thoughts ahead of the much-anticipated ILT20 Continental Cup Finals.
The team has been in top form, completing the round-robin stage unbeaten, capped off with a commanding 32-run victory over Botswana.
Veteran spinner Frank Nsubuga was the standout performer, claiming three wickets with an impressive economy of 3.25 in his four overs, earning him the Player of the Match award.
Reflecting on the team’s performance and their preparations, Sharma emphasized the importance of taking the final “step by step.”
He described the tournament as crucial in building momentum for the ICC Mens T20 World Cup Qualifiers scheduled for next year in Zimbabwe.
“All the players have had the opportunity to play atleast four games, and I believe we will field the best team for tomorrow’s final against Nigeria,”
Sharma noted confidently.
Team captain Riazat Ali Shah shared similar optimism, stating briefly,
“The team is in great shape to win tomorrow’s game.”
Uganda’s flawless performance in the tournament so far.
Many believe that Uganda’s batting has not been as convincing as expected, arguing that the team should have posted stronger totals against all their opponents.
However, these criticisms overlook the challenges posed by the aging and overused wicket currently in play.
Following a discussion among tournament officials, there is growing anticipation that the pitch where Uganda scored an impressive 229 runs against Botswana might be used for tomorrow’s game in the afternoon.
Observers noted that the wicket was watered after the mid-pitch conference, hinting at preparations for its possible use.
Amidst these speculations, head coach Sharma has reassured fans that the team remains fully focused and is not underestimating the challenge ahead.
Injury concerns have emerged for Shrideep Mangela, who was struck on the elbow during the second innings warm-up against Botswana and did not field.
He was replaced by Pascal Murungi and was later seen with ice wrapped around his elbow.
His participation in the final remains uncertain, pending a late fitness test.
Uganda’s probable starting XI includes:
Riazat Ali Shah (C), Obuya Robinson, Simon Ssesazi, Raghavu Dhawani, Frank Nsubuga, Alpesh Raman, Achelam Fred (WK), Dinesh Nakrani, Juma Miyaji, Cosmas Kyewuta, Pascal Murungi
Should Mangela pass the fitness test, he may reclaim his spot in place of Murungi.
Uganda’s final opponents, Nigeria, are also coming off a strong performance, defeating Rwanda by 37 runs.
Fans in Kigali and allover the world can expect an electrifying contest as both teams aim for the title
