Uganda Cranes Ready for Historic Quarterfinal Clash Against Defending Champions Senegal

The Uganda Cranes are primed for their biggest test yet as they face defending champions Senegal in the quarterfinals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. The highly anticipated showdown is set for Saturday at 5:00 PM and marks a historic moment for Uganda as they make their first-ever appearance in the tournament’s quarterfinal stage.

After an impressive run in the group stage, the Cranes have shifted their focus to this pivotal knockout tie against a battle hardened Senegalese side that enters the match with title defense ambitions and tournament experience on their side.

Addressing the media ahead of the encounter, Uganda Cranes CHAN team head coach Morley Byekwaso emphasized his team’s readiness and determination to rise to the occasion.

We are playing a well-organised team that has been in the tournament for a long time,” Byekwaso stated. “We have played them in friendlies and we know their strengths. The Senegalese are very physical, but every team has weaknesses. This is no longer the group stage mistakes at this level can cost us dearly. The boys are well prepared both physically and emotionally, so we are good to go.”

Byekwaso acknowledged the threat posed by the reigning champions but was quick to point out Uganda’s key approach – discipline and composure under pressure.

We must be disciplined as we are facing a disciplined team. We will focus on minimising mistakes and forcing them into errors. That is how we will create scoring opportunities,” he said.

Another advantage Uganda hopes to capitalise on is the home crowd. With the match being played on home soil, Byekwaso urged fans to come out in large numbers and rally behind the team.

This is a tournament where every team is strong, but playing at home gives us a boost,” he added. “Our fans have been incredible, pushing the team until the last whistle. We call upon them once again to rally behind us. Together, we can achieve great things.”

As Uganda Cranes prepare to write a new chapter in their CHAN history, all eyes will be on Namboole this Saturday evening. A victory over Senegal would not only be a monumental achievement but also a signal of Uganda’s growing stature in African football.
