The Tanzania U19 women’s cricket team is set to arrive in Uganda for a bilateral series featuring five T20 matches from July 20th to 27th.
This series is a crucial part of both teams’ preparation for the Under 19 World Cup Qualifier scheduled for August in Rwanda.
The series between Uganda and Tanzania promises to be intense and valuable for both squads.
With a blend of young talent and a few experienced players, the teams aim to test their skills and strategies.
Tanzania’s head coach, Arun Yadav, emphasized the importance of the series, stating,
This series is an excellent opportunity for our young players to showcase their talents and gain crucial match experience.
Tanzania team captain, Jennipher Gabriel, shared her excitement, saying,
“We are thrilled to be playing against Uganda. It’s a great opportunity to gauge where we stand and what areas we need to improve before the World Cup Qualifier.”
Uganda finished fourth in the last qualifiers in 2022 in Botswana, while Tanzania narrowly missed out on the World Cup after losing to Rwanda in the finals.
The Baby Victoria Pearls aim to emulate the Baby Cricket Cranes, who have qualified for the World Cup three times, by securing their own spot.
The U-19 Girls World Cup is a new ICC tournament, with its first edition won by India in South Africa in 2023.
We are grateful to host Tanzania in preparation for the qualifiers.
This tournament will help give the girls match practice, work on combinations both with the ball and bat, and build confidence among the players.
We have some girls who were part of the last qualifiers in Botswana, but we have added several new players to the squad who have never played international cricket.
This tournament should help them get a taste of international competition,”
said Yusuf Nanga, Uganda’s U-19 Girls Head Coach.
On January 17, 2020, these two under-19 teams faced off, with Uganda securing a 14-run victory at Kyambogo Cricket Oval.
However, the teams have never met in an ICC event.
