UFL: SLAU Edge UCU to Secure Quarterfinal Spot

St. Lawrence University (SLAU) booked their place in the 2024/25 University Football League quarterfinals after a 2-1 victory over Uganda Christian University (UCU) on Thursday at Kavule.

The win saw SLAU top Group C with 10 points, two ahead of UCU, sealing their progression to the knockout rounds.

The game started at a high tempo, with SLAU dominating possession. Despite early chances, they had to wait until first-half stoppage time to break the deadlock when Haruna Nyanzi fired a thunderous shot past the UCU goalkeeper, giving SLAU a 1-0 halftime lead.

UCU fought back in the second half and equalized in the 63rd minute through Mugerwa Lawrence’s well taken penalty.

However, SLAU quickly regained control, with Kembo Arafat heading in the winner in the 70th minute. Despite late pressure from UCU, SLAU held firm to secure the crucial three points.

With this victory, SLAU advanced as Group C winners and joined five other teams in the quarterfinals. The knockout stage will be played over two legs, with first-leg fixtures scheduled for March 18-22 and return legs from March 24-28.
