The 2025 Taibah International Schools Badminton Championship came to an exciting close on Sunday, March 16, with Kibuli SS and Mbogo High School emerging as the boys’ and girls’ team event champions, respectively.

However, one aspect of the tournament remained unresolved, the doubles matches, which were postponed due to logistical challenges.

The tournament, which had not been played since 2019, made a highly anticipated return, drawing over 400 young players from various schools.

The three day competition featured primary and secondary school participants, competing in both individual and team categories.

Speaking after the tournament, Uganda Badminton Association (UBA) CEO Simon Mugabi expressed his delight at the high number of entries, with over 30 schools and 500 participants taking part.

“This was a massive entry as far as we are concerned,” Mugabi stated.

“The schools were yearning for a tournament of their own, which resulted in the high turnout. The standard of play has been very high, and it has been a wonderful event.”

Mugabi also highlighted the importance of the tournament in talent identification, explaining that the school championships serve as a stepping stone for young players aiming to qualify for continental and global competitions, including the 2026 Youth Olympics in Senegal.

Why the Doubles Were Postponed

Despite the successful completion of the team and individual events, the doubles matches, including the boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles, and mixed doubles, could not be played as scheduled.

Mugabi attributed this to the overwhelming number of participants and the limited availability of courts, which made it impossible to complete all the scheduled matches within the tournament’s timeframe.

“Because of the massive number of entries and, of course, the few courts, we couldn’t finish the event,” he explained.

“So we are going to have this played next week on Saturday, either here or at CFK.”

Despite the change in schedule, Mugabi assured that the postponement would not disrupt the Uganda Badminton Association’s activities.

“It doesn’t affect the UBA calendar because we didn’t have anything scheduled on that weekend, so it is very fine,” he confirmed.

With the doubles matches now set to be played next weekend, the 2025 Taibah International Schools Badminton Championship continues to serve as a vital platform for grooming future badminton stars.
