The 2024 U-17 AFCON CECAFA Qualifiers kicked off with Group A tie that saw hosts Uganda share spoils Tanzania at the Hamz stadium in Nakivubo on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams settled for a 1-1 draw with Saleh Ally from the right through the different players gave Tanzania an early lead 19 minutes into the game.

However Uganda leveled matters 13 minutes after the restart through Isima Magala after his shot on the 18 yards box edge was deflected into the net.

Remainder of the game saw Uganda in total control with Brian Ijara at the heart of the midfield but still failed to find the net despite long range shots from Abubakali Walusimbi and Richard Okello after Tanzania kept their compact-ness.

Juma Abushiri just like Juma Sagwe had chances for Tanzania with one hitting the crossbar and other being held by Uganda shot stopper Edrissa Waibi.

In the game that kicked off the Championship, South Sudan stopped reigning champions Somalia with a 3-0 result.

Sudan’s goals were scored by Shakir Antacio with 7 minutes to close the opening half before Panon Jou doubled the lead finishing off a well taken Lazarus Peter George Laku cross.

Lazarus with 18 minutes left on the game finished off from a free kick to put South Sudan 3-0 ahead.

Action will return on Wednesday with Tanzania facing Kenya in a Group A tie whereas South Sudan take on Sudan in a Group B match.

Only the best two teams will qualify for the U-17 AFCON to take place in Ivory Coast next year.
