Organizers of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon are gearing up for its highly anticipated fourth edition, set to take place on August 23, 2025.

Since its inception in 2022, the marathon has grown exponentially, emerging as one of Uganda’s premier sporting and tourism events.

The marathon’s growth has been remarkable, with participation increasing from 800 runners in its first year to over 3,700 in the last edition.

The 2024 event recorded an 87% increase in runners, with 85% being Ugandan, 10% from other African nations, and 5% from outside Africa.

Beyond being a competitive race, the marathon has significantly impacted Kasese’s local economy and tourism. Surveys indicate that:

  • 90% of locals acknowledge the marathon’s positive effect on the economy.
  • 87% of businesses reported increased visibility, sales, and customer flow.
  • 100% of hotels and accommodations were fully booked during the event.
  • 98% of participants believe the marathon enhances Kasese’s appeal as a tourist destination.
  • 70% of runners extended their stay to visit local attractions like Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Despite its success, the event faces logistical hurdles such as limited accommodations, inadequate washroom facilities, and unclear transport arrangements. Organizers have outlined several measures to address these challenges:

  • Expanding vendor opportunities for local businesses.
  • Advocating for group transport options to Kasese.
  • Enhancing environmental awareness campaigns.
  • Securing a larger event venue.
  • Organizing safe and convenient parking facilities.
  • Providing distinct race kits for each category.

Amos Wekesa, the marathon’s visionary, credits its success to its broader objectives of promoting health, tourism, economic growth, and environmental conservation.

Hon. Kabbyanga Godfrey Baluku Kiime, Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance, praised the event’s role in revitalizing Kasese’s economy. He reassured participants that accommodation shortages are being addressed, with renovations in small hotels and plans for additional camping sites.

The marathon’s success would not be possible without its sponsors and partners, including Tusker Lite, Britam, Rwenzori Water (Coca-Cola), Standard Chartered, Toyota, the Ministry of Tourism, Uganda Wildlife Authority, Kasese Investors, and Swangz Avenue.

With growing participation and increasing economic benefits, the 2025 edition of the Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon is expected to further cement its status as a flagship event in Uganda’s sporting and tourism calendar.
