Kavuma Jackson has officially taken over as the new Chairman of the Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) after being elected during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 1st March at Kati Kati Restaurant. This election marks the beginning of a new chapter for Ugandan cricket, with the newly elected leaders promising to improve governance, grow the game beyond schools, and ensure financial stability.

Election Results and Leadership Changes

Eight cricket clubs—Africa Cricket Club, Wanderers Cricket Club, Nile Cricket Club, Tornado Cricket Club, Tornado Bees Cricket Club, Premier Cricket Club, Kampala Institute Cricket Club (KICC), and Jinja Association of Cricket Clubs (JACC)—each sent two delegates to vote.

New Executive Team:
  • Chairman: Kavuma Jackson (Africa Cricket Club) won against Fred Lutaaya (Tornado Cricket Club) with 10 votes to 6, despite earlier concerns about whether JACC delegates would be allowed to vote due to internal disputes. However, FUFA Deputy CEO Mr. Kiiza Decolas, who was the Returning Officer, ruled that they could participate.
  • Honorary Secretary: Denis Musali (Wanderers Cricket Club) won against Jeremy Kibukamusoke (Tornado Bees Cricket Club) by 11 votes to 5.
  • Women’s Representative: Lelia Namaganda Ondeko was unopposed and took over from Rita Tinka.

The election was also observed by Mrs. Sarah Chelangati from the National Council of Sports (NCS).

Plans for Ugandan Cricket’s Future

Kavuma takes over from Michael Nuwagaba, who served as UCA Chairman for four years. Speaking after his election, Kavuma said his main focus is on helping Uganda achieve ODI status, following the team’s recent T20 World Cup qualification.

He also admitted that financial accountability has been a challenge for UCA but assured the cricket community that the new leadership will work hard to fix these issues.

Key Priorities of the New Leadership

1. Following the New Sports Law

A seven-member committee has been formed to review the UCA constitution and ensure it meets the new government regulations. One key change will be extending executive terms from two years to four years. The updates should be completed by April or May.

2. Strengthening UCA’s Financial Standing

Kavuma plans to bring in more sponsors to support Ugandan cricket, building on the current partnership with Lyca Mobile. He emphasized the importance of securing long-term financial support to help the game grow.

“We must uphold integrity, welcome constructive criticism, and work together to take cricket in Uganda to the next level.”Kavuma Jackson, UCA Chairman

3. Improving Governance and Teamwork

The new Honorary Secretary, Denis Musali, called for teamwork and unity within the leadership to avoid conflicts that have slowed progress in the past.

Moving forward, the UCA executive will focus on improving administration, increasing participation in the sport, and ensuring Uganda performs well in international competitions.

With a new leadership team in place, Ugandan cricket is set for a fresh start, with hopes of reaching greater heights on the international stage.
