Sunrise FC has officially parted ways with head coach Jackson Mayanja following a string of disappointing results, with the team also missing out on the playoffs. The decision was confirmed by the club on Friday, marking the end of Mayanja’s stint after less than a full season in charge.
Mayanja, a former Uganda Cranes star and seasoned tactician, joined Sunrise FC in January with high expectations to guide the club into Rwanda’s top-tier playoff contention. However, a poor run of form, marked by inconsistent performances and a lack of cohesion on the pitch, led to mounting pressure from fans and club officials alike.
Sunrise FC’s management cited unsatisfactory results as the main reason for the separation, stating in an official club communication, “The club has mutually agreed to part ways with Coach Jackson Mayanja following the failure to meet performance targets set at the beginning of his tenure.”
Despite the early optimism around his appointment, Mayanja’s side struggled to gain momentum, registering only a handful of wins and falling short in crucial matches that could have turned the tide of their season. The final blow came when Sunrise failed to secure a playoff spot, a key benchmark that had been set as a minimum expectation.
The club is now on the hunt for a new head coach who can reinvigorate the squad ahead of the next campaign. In the interim, assistant coach Jean Paul will take over the team’s affairs as the board initiates the search for a suitable replacement.
Jackson Mayanja, known for his passion and tactical acumen, has yet to comment publicly on his exit. His departure adds to a growing list of managerial changes across the Rwandan football scene as clubs react to underperformance and seek new direction.
Sunrise FC fans now look ahead with cautious optimism, hopeful that a fresh start can revive the club’s ambitions for promotion and competitiveness in the coming seasons.
