Skipper Halid Lwaliwa and Caesar Manzoki were on target for Vipers as they held to defeat Bright Stars 2-1 on Wednesday evening and extend their lead atop of the Uganda premier league to four points.
Halid was on target in the opening half while Manzoki netted the winner in the closing half after Ibrahim Kasinde had levelled matters for Stars.
Vipers got off to fine start as they broke the deadlock in 10th minute through Halid Lwaliwa who rose high to head home a well driven Bobosi Byaruhanga freekick.
Before the goal, Milton Karisa had a chance of his own to break the deadlock when he raced past Simon Tamale, but he slipped and failed to generate a sizeable effort into the back of net.
After going behind, Bright Stars changed their style of play and started creating several chances throughout the opening half, but were denied on several occasions by Fabien Mutombora.
Mutombora acrobatically saved Emmanuel Loki’s effort in the 21st before denying Loki again just before the break.
The game went in the break with the hosts leading 1-0, but that lead only stood until the 49th minute as Bright Stars levelled matters from the penalty spot after Yasin Mugume was judged to have been fouled by Byaruhanga in the forbidden area. Ibrahim Kasinde stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to pull his side level.
But six minutes afterwards, Manzoki restored the Venom’s lead with a brilliant strike after pouncing onto a loose ball in the Bright Stars defense.
Moments later, the venoms came close to a third but Yunus Sentamu’s effort was parried away for a corner by Simon Tamale.
After the hour mark, Tamale kept his side into the game when he saved Byaruhanga’s spotkick after Sentamu was fouled in the forbidden area by Warren Bule.
In the 83rd minute, Milton Karisa missed a brilliant to extend Vipers lead as he blazed high from pointblank range after being set-up by Cesar Manzoki.
Vipers held on to secure a vital 2-1 victory at home to extend their lead atop of the summit to four points.
They have now garnered 43 points in 19 games.
Soltilo Bright Stars stay second bottom with 17 points.
