StarTimes UPL: Vipers aim to extend lead atop with victory over their nemesis URA

There will be fireworks in Ndejje on Tuesday evening when two of the three leading teams in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League collide.

Vipers who are top of the pile with 52 points, will pay visit to the Arena of Visions to take on third-placed URA FC (who are just nine points below them).

The venoms will go out in search of a victory that will see them stretch their lead at the table to 9 points above second placed KCCA FC (who drew goalless with Arua Hill SC at home on Monday)

In the pre-match interview, assistant Coach Marcelo
Cardoso came out to say that, “Tomorrow’s match isn’t a regular match. It’s a special match between the top three clubs in the League.”

“In the first round, we lost the game against our opponent and tomorrow we have the opportunity to play well and show the people we are there to win the championship and that’s want we want and is our main objective” he added

On the other side, The Tax Collectors have been striving for form with just 5 points out of the possible 12 after two successive games without a win ( one loss against BUL FC and a draw against Arua Hill SC).

Despite their poor run of form, URA head into this game full of confidence having won all three of their last meeting with Vipers.

In fact in their 35 meeting in Ugandan history, the Tax Collectors have beaten the Venoms 16 times compared to Vipers 6, while 12 have ended in stalemates.

For Vipers, they start the day top of the pile and need only to win so as to stretch their lead to the summit.

After succumbing to their third loss of the season at the hands of Tooro United (whose victory was overturned due to use of a suspended player) early last month, the Venoms have bounced back in style, winning their last two games against Busoga United and Mbarara City respectively.

The winner of this game will create a change in the title race but KCCA FC, who are just six points off top spot, in second, will be hoping the two sides share spoils or Vipers is beaten.

Match Stats

This will be the 35th meeting between the two sides since 2006

In the past 23 meetings, URA has won eight, Vipers six with the other seven have ended in stalemates.

URA defeated Vipers 2-0 in the reverse meeting earlier this season courtesy of Joakim Ojera and Cromwell Rwothomio’s goals in either half.

URA head into the game having won their past two games against Vipers at home. Last season’s game at Ndejje ended 2-1 in favor of the Tax Collectors to dent the venoms’ title hopes.

Vipers SC have reported no fresh injury concerns following their last game against Mbarara.
