Startimes UPL: Kitegenyi, Ssemugabi on target as Mbarara squeeze past Arua Hill

Forwards Henry Kitegenyi and Jude Ssemugabi were on target for Mbarara City FC as they defeated Arua Hill SC 2-0 in a StarTimes Uganda Premier League game played at Kakyeka Stadium, Mbarara on Friday.

Kitegenyi netted early on in the first half while Ssemugabi was on target early in the second half to secure their side a second win of the season.

Alfred Leku netted the consolation for Arua Hill SC.

The Ankole Lions had the first attempt at goal as Captain Hilliary Mukundane wasted a glorious chance to put his freekick attempt wide.

Two minutes afterwards, Mbarara City took the game’s lead after awful defending  Ibrahim Magandazi and Faizul Ibrahim to gift Kitegenyi an open chance one on one with Arua Hill SC goalie Richard Anyama. The former Vipers forward calmly chipped the ball past Anyama for the Ankole Lions opener.

Aside from that early, the first half was far from entertaining as both sides struggled to create enough goalscoring opportunities upfront throughout the opening 45 minutes.

The game went into the break with Kitegenyi’s strike being the only difference between the two sides.

Just after the break, Mbarara City doubled their lead with Jude Ssemugabi tapping in a deflected Stephen Othieno’s cross.

After conceding a second goal, Arua Hill head coach Livingstone Mbabazi made a double change, bringing on Alfred Leku and Allan Mugalu for Yusuf Ssaka and David Ndihabwe respective with hope that his side can put a goal back.

And they did in the 72nd minute after Leku and Robert Eseru combined well for the former to pull a goal back for the Leopards.

Mbarara could have extended their lead before the end of the game but Anyama two brilliant saves to deny Pitsis Barenge on two separate occasions.

Arua Hill tried to level matters also but Mbarara’s  backline remained rock solid to secure the victory.

With the 2-1 victory, Mbarara City move to six points garnered in three games and will play BUL FC away next.

For Arua Hill, they have lost their first game of the season, having won the first game against Express FC before drawing goalless with Onduparaka FC.
