Debutant Kipson Atuheire scored the all important goal as Wakiso giants edged Mbarara City 1-0 at the Kakyeka Stadium, Mbarara to earn their maiden win in the 2020/21 StarTimes Uganda Premier league season.
The home side, Mbarara City looked a threat in the first half as they dominated almost everything in the first stanza. Hillary Mukundane and Jude Ssemugabi all had brilliant chance to propel the Ankole lions into the halftime lead but Wakiso Giants goalie Samson Kiirya denied them several times to ensure the game went into the break with scores tied.
The Douglas Bamweyana’s side came back into the second half a better side and thought they have gotten the game’s opener in the 55th minute but Vianne Ssekajugo’s effort was ruled out due to a handball.
The Purple sharks kept pressing the Ankole lions backline and were rewarded in the 57th minute when January recruit Atuheire pounced onto Ibrahim Owen Kasule pass to slot home his dream debut goal and put Wakiso giants into a well deserved lead.
From there on, Mbarara tried their level best to find the leveller but Kirya in the giants goal seemed invincible to beat as he made a couple of brilliant saves to the keep the sharks in the lead.
With eight minutes to play, Mbarara were handed a glorious opportunity to level matters after Joshua Lubwama handled in the area but Ssemugabi’s effort from the penalty mark came off the post for just a goal kick.
The result today sees Wakiso Giants maintain their unbeaten start to the season and now move onto eight points garnered in six games while Mbarara remain on three points after drawing three and losing as many in their opening six encounters.
The Purple Sharks will play hosts to SC Villa in their next encounter at Wakisha Resource centre on Wednesday evening while the Ankole lions will take on Kitara FC on Tuesday evening.
