Joseph Yiga came off the bench to save a penalty and earn SC Villa in a place in the round of 16 of this year’s Stanbic Uganda Cup after a shootout victory over Express FC at Wakulukuku.

Greek coach Petros Koukouras made the call to replace Martin Ssenkoto in the closing stage of the goalless draw – with Yiga then providing the heroics.

Enock Walusimbi, George Ssenkaaba and Arthur Kiggundu netted Express first three penalties but Frank Ssekyanzi put his wide before Yiga saved Eric Kambale penalty as Villa won the shootout 4-3.

Saddam Masereka, Nicholas Kabonge, Amir Kakomo and Sadam Juma were perfect for Villa from the spot.

Express dominated the game from the start but were occasionally denied by Ssenkoto, who did brilliantly to save Kambale and Joseph Akwandanawo’ numerous shots in the opening half.

SC Villa first real test at the Red Eagles goal came early on in the second half when youngster Travis Mutyaba dribbled past his marker to set up Joseph Kafumbe, but the wingback shot agonizingly off the mark.

Substitute Benson Muhindo also had a fine chance to win the game for Villa but his volley was acrobatically turned away for a corner by Crypus Kusiima.

Moments later at the other end, Ssenkoto made another save to deny George Ssenkaaba this time who had sent in a ferocious shot from outside the box.

At the end of 90 minutes despite the chances, the game ended goalless prompting a shootout to decide the winner.

And Villa shootout Express 4-3 to progress to the next round where they will face Onduparaka to decide who makes it to the quarterfinals.
